Model Creation

This phase of Power System Study projects is the most time consuming portion of the process. There are several important milestones along the way in order to arrive at proper Arc Flash Labels. The input process usually results in discovering that there is either more information that needs to be gathered, or that the library for the modeling program needs to be updated. Once all of the data has been entered correctly, including the Available Fault Current, the Time-Current Curves (TCCs) need to be generated and evaluated for coordination. This can generate a list of items that require attention, either in the form of a change in setting in the field, or an informed decision from the client regarding the lack of coordination. Once these items have been resolved, it is time to finalize the TCCs, as well as the Coordination Study to memorialize the Electrical Distribution System condition.

With the Coordination Study complete, it is appropriate to move on to the Arc Flash Study. The available energy at a given point in the Electrical Distribution System is entirely dependent on the Available Fault Current as well as the Time it will take to clear the fault. The Coordination Study established the final Time settings for all the devices, and the model now shows the Available Fault Current at each point in the Electrical Distribution System. With these items complete, the Arc Flash Report can be generated. This is another milestone in the process, and this information should be reviewed with the client to verify that the Arc Flash Hazard is at an acceptable level throughout the Electrical Distribution System. If there are points that need to be remediated, this can involve a revision to the Coordination Study, or an physical alteration to the Electrical Distribution System, such as the installation of maintenance switches. Once there is agreement on the Arc Flash Hazard Analysis, and the model has been appropriately modified, it is finally time to produce Arc Flash Labels.
